First surgical masterclass with Cleveland Clinic takes place

Healthcare professionals received a masterclass in surgical oncology at the Royal Society of Medicine this week. 

The free event was the first in a series of five surgical masterclasses in partnership with Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s most respected academic medical centres. 

Prominent professionals in the field updated event participants on advances in oncological gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, focusing on: 

  • the central role of multidisciplinary decision-making and multimodal treatment of GI cancer 
  • indications for ultra-radical GI resection, with consideration of the risks and outcome 
  • the place of organ-saving surgery 

Speakers included Ms Tamzin Cuming, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon; Mr Sacheen Kumar, Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon; Professor Muntzer Mughal, Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon, Cleveland Clinic London; and Professor Jamie Murphy, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon. 

Professor Humphrey Scott, Dean of Education at the Royal Society of Medicine, opened the session.
