Join this new free 5-part series of clinical masterclass sessions, in association with Cleveland Clinic London.

Episode 4 in the series will be covering all the new techniques and therapies to steer away from surgery. We will be hearing from Dr Rehan Haidry, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Dr Mark Samaan, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Dr Natalie Phillips, Consultant gastroenterologist and hepatobiliary physician.Chaired by Dr Charles Murray, Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist and Department Chair of Gastroenterology.

Guests who join in person at the Royal Society of Medicine will have access to a complimentary drinks reception and the chance to join an optional dinner to network with fellow attendees and well-renowned speakers from the masterclass. The masterclass will be live streamed for those unable to attend in person.

The aim of this masterclass is to stimulate though about minimally invasive procedures which might replace traditional major surgery and to learn about recent improvements in technology which have allowed developments in procedural techniques to minimise the trauma of intervention. 

Professor Humphrey Scott, Dean of the Royal Society of Medicine, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Peter’s Hospital will be opening the session.

The masterclass series will feature leading experts from the world of clinical excellence discussing the latest innovations and developments across five clinical areas:

CPD certificate with 2 CPD credits will be issued to those joining in-person, as well as those who watch the live stream or view the on-demand recording. Certificates will be issued 7 days after the event to those who watch it live and after 30 days for those that watch the recording.

Speaker's biography

Dr Charles Murray is a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust where he is also Clinical Director for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. He served as Senior Secretary of the British Society of Gastroenterology from 2009-2013.

Dr Murray is currently Chair of the Education Committee of United European Gastroenterology, and Past President of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. Dr Murray was awarded the Moti L. and Kamla Rustgi International Fellowship by the American Gastroenterological Association in 2005, and in 2007 was the Functional Brain-Gut Research Group Young Investigator of the Year.

Speaker's biography

Mark gained experience as a clinician and researcher at specialist IBD centres in England, The Netherlands, Canada and the US. His international experience was undertaken as part of an “International IBD Clinical Trials Fellowship” with Robarts (now Alimentiv). He has participated in and led a broad spectrum of original IBD research projects and has been published in several high impact journals. In addition, he has co-authored several book chapters on IBD and worked as a Bibliographic Fellow on the IOIBD international consensus process regarding treatment targets in IBD (STRIDE).

He was awarded the ‘St George’s Young Researcher of the Year Award’ in 2015 and again in 2016. He was runner up for the 2016 ‘BSG Alistair McIntyre Prize’ for improving education by founding the London IBD SpR Training Group. In 2017 he received an ‘RCP/NIHR CRN Award for Outstanding Research Leadership in the NHS’ and an ECCO Travel Award. In 2018 he was named the ‘BSG Young Gastroenterologist of the Year for Clinical & Translational Science’ and received another ‘RCP/NIHR CRN Award for Outstanding Research Leadership in the NHS’. He was chosen as an ‘Advanced IBD Fellow’ for the Cornerstones program at DDW 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2021 he was awarded an NIHR CRN Principal Investigator Greenshoots initiative award.

He was the trainee member of UK Clinical Research Network: Gastroenterology National Specialty Group for three years and now sits on the Young-ECCO (Y-ECCO) committee. He spent three years as Clinical Research Fellow at Guy’s and St Thomas’, investigating therapeutic drug monitoring for biologic agents in IBD, as part of an MD program at Kings College London. He is now a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Guy’s & St Thomas’ as well as Cleveland Clinic London.

Speaker's biography

Dr Rehan Haidry is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist at UCLH and CCL where he is the clinical lead of endoscopy. His main areas of clinical & academic interest are in pre-malignant and malignant disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract, with a particular interest in Barrett’s neoplasia, Squamous neoplasia, oesophageal cancer and advanced interventional endoscopy for these conditions with ablation and resection.

He carries out minimally invasive treatments for acid reflux with Transoral incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) & Stretta and is among a few U.K. endoscopists to carry out metabolic & bariatric endoscopic procedures such as Duodenal mucosal resurfacing (DMR), POSE and Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG).

Speaker's biography

Dr Natalie Phillips is a Gastroenterologist specialising in Pancreatobiliary medicine. Dr Phillips graduated from Guy's and St Thomas' Medical School, London in 2003 with distinction and trained in London with a period of specialist training in Australia. She is also trained in advanced endoscopy including luminal stenting, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).

She has a Masters in Translational Medicine completed at Imperial. Currently she is involved in clinical studies for novel treatments in pancreatic cancer. Her roles include unit and endoscopy training lead at Hammersmith Hospital. Outside medicine she enjoys spending time with her family and travelling.
