Join the latest event in our Clinical masterclass series for an update on sports medicine.

Sports medicine is a rapidly developing area with a huge scope of practice and many fields of interest. Our speakers from Cleveland Clinic London will take a multidisciplinary approach and comprise a Sports and Exercise Medicine physician, a Rheumatologist and an Orthopaedic Surgeon.

During this episode you will:

  • Understand the management and consequences of head trauma in sports
  • Learn the relevant background information to explain the current measures employed to reduce sub-concussive injury in football, which are applicable to grassroots participants
  • Be updated on the latest advances in rheumatology, and their practical application
  • Review all that is new in sports knee surgery, with a particular pragmatic focus on what is actually being done
  • Become familiar with the concept of knee joint preservation
  • Acquire knowledge of the treatment options when dealing with young patients with sports injuries and subsequent arthritis

Guests who join in person at the Royal Society of Medicine will have access to a complimentary drinks reception and the chance to join an optional dinner to network with fellow attendees and well-renowned speakers from the masterclass. The masterclass will be live streamed for those unable to attend in person.

This episode will be featuring Mr Philip Ahrens, Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Mark Gillett, Consultant in Sports & Exercise Medicine, Dr Taryn Youngstein, Consultant Rheumatologist and Mr Kash Akhtar, Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon. Professor Humphrey Scott, Dean of the Royal Society of Medicine, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, St Peter’s Hospital will be opening the session.

The masterclass series will feature leading experts from the world of clinical excellence discussing the latest innovations and developments across five clinical areas:

CPD certificate with 2 CPD credits will be issued to those joining in-person, as well as those who watch the live stream or view the on-demand recording. Certificates will be issued 7 days after the event to those who watch it live and after 30 days for those that watch the recording.

Speaker's biography

Mark was appointed as the medical advisor to the Premier League in November 2018 after a decade of experience as a team physician and performance director in that league.

He qualified in 1992 and completed higher specialist training in Emergency Medicine in the West Midlands in 2003. He has a MSc in Sports Medicine from the University of Nottingham and is a founding Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK. From 2003-2008 he worked for the English Institute of Sport as a sports physician and in 2008 he became first team doctor at Chelsea FC, before moving to WBA FC as Director of Performance in 2010 and onto Nottingham Forest in 2018. In 2012 he was a member of Team GB at the London Olympics as Chief Medical Officer to the men’s and women’s basketball squads. He was instrumental in the development of the AREA pre-hospital care training course for the Football Association in 2008.

He is a previous chairman of the Premier League Doctors Group and was training program director for Sports & Exercise Medicine in the West Midlands from 2009 – 2016 and deputy chair of the national training committee from 2014-2016.

Speaker's biography

Kash specialises purely in knees and manages all aspects of knee injuries. He has a particular expertise in sports injuries and knee preservation. He studied medicine at Imperial College, graduating with a Distinction in Surgery. He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2005 and the Fellowship (FRCS Tr & Orth) in 2011. He has undertaken a Masters in Medical Education (MEd, with Distinction) and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree. He has given over 100 international presentations, and has
received multiple prizes and awards. Kash completed his subspecialty fellowship in all aspects of knee surgery at the renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.

He was subsequently awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship and spent 6 months in international centres of orthopaedic excellence across the USA. He was appointed as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knees at Barts Health NHS Trust in 2014, one of the busiest hospitals in the country, which receives complex tertiary referrals from a broad area. Kash is also appointed as a Reader in Orthopaedic Surgery & Surgical Education at Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry, QMUL and is an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia. His academic research focuses on achieving the best patient outcomes and optimising patient safety through surgical education and training using cutting edge techniques.

He is the Training Programme Director for the prestigious Royal London Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery rotation and is a member of the Executive Committees of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the Specialist Advisory Committee to the Joint Committee on Surgical Training. He is a co-founder of orthohub and host of the award-winning see one / do one podcast, that has been downloaded in over 120 countries.
