Medicine and Me is a series of events that aim to provide an open environment in which the patient’s voice is given top priority. They give patients the opportunity to learn more about the latest treatments and research for their particular condition as well as allow healthcare professionals to hear first-hand from patients and their families about their concerns and experiences.
The Medicine and Me programme was specifically designed to bring together patients, their families and carers, with healthcare professionals and researchers, to discuss current management and research issues of a particular condition in a setting that encourages an open discussion of the issues of greatest concern to patients. First established in 2004, the series of meetings was developed by the RSM’s former Academic Dean Dr John Scadding, and the programme has grown significantly, with more meetings being organised each year.
The events are always jointly organised with the relevant patient support group or research charity and patients with the disease in question. This ensures that the programmes of the meetings are structured to meet the needs and concerns of the patients concerned. Past meetings have covered a wide range of conditions, including asthma, psoriasis, eczema, diabetes, prostate cancer, breast cancer and stroke, as well as a range of less common conditions. You can see a list of topics covered here.
Lectures from the talks are often recorded and available to watch on RSM Videos for free.
The talks are suitable for patients, their families, carers and advocates, and best of all, the Medicine and Me meetings are free to attend for patients. Clinicians and researchers are also able to attend for a small charge and CPD points are available.
