friends of libraryThe Royal Society of Medicine Library is one of the largest postgraduate biomedical lending libraries in Europe.

The collection exceeds half a million volumes and dates back to the 15th century, with over 53,000 rare books, manuscripts, portraits and photographs in the collection.



The Friends of the Library make an important contribution to the RSM Library’s work and its extensive conservation programme. They help:

  • Fund the cost of conservation
  • Purchase relevant conservation equipment
  • Ensure the ongoing preservation of the RSM’s collection

To become a Friend of the Library is simple. It costs just £30 a year, and you can sign up by emailing It is an affordable way to help support the RSM Library.

As a Friend, you will enjoy the following benefits: 

  • A bi-annual Library e-newsletter, providing an update on books that have been conserved, books due to be conserved and upcoming library events
  • The opportunity to adopt a book
  • Private view invitations to Library exhibitions and private guided tours of the RSM Library
  • The chance to view parts of the RSM’s Diamond Collection, not normally on display to the public
  • Automatically become a member of the Virtual Library Users Group (VLUG)

How much does it cost?

The Friends of the Library’s annual cost is just £30 and it is eligible for Gift Aid. The subscription can be added to your existing RSM membership. Non RSM members who wish to support this vital work are also eligible to join.
