RSM Section Presidents collaborate on neuropathies masterclass

Three of the RSM’s Section Presidents will come together for the next instalment of our popular clinical masterclass series on diabetic neuropathy, to be held at the RSM on Tuesday 20 May.

Dr Abdul Lakhdar, Endocrinology and Diabetes Section President; Dr Ash Shetty, Pain Medicine Section President; and Professor Christian Heiss Vascular, Lipid and Metabolic Medicine Section President will share their collective expertise in this important session on neuropathic pain, focusing on neuromodulation. The collaboration of these three Section Presidents highlights the value of cross-disciplinary education in advancing healthcare to improve patient outcomes.

An estimated 4.3 million people in the UK live with diabetes, and it is expected that over 50% of all adults with diabetes will be affected by neuropathic pain in their lifetime [1] - making this a hugely salient subject, relevant to a range of healthcare providers. The fourth session to date in our annual clinical masterclass series on the topic, the event is designed to enhance understanding of current guidelines for treating neuropathic pain and neuromodulation as a treatment method.

Dr Ash Shetty, Honorary Associate Professor at University College London and Consultant in Pain Management at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will deliver an update on the state-of-the-art of neuropathy treatment.

This will be followed by insights into the management of painful diabetic neuropathy by Dr Abdul Lakhdar, Consultant Endocrinologist at Barts Health NHS Trust, specialising in diabetes and endocrine diseases.

Professor Christian Heiss, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Surrey, as well as an Honorary Consultant in Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Surrey and Sussex NHS Healthcare Trust, will speak on the importance of neuropathy in vascular medicine before chairing a panel discussion. Dr Fareeha Rizvi, Clinical Lead and Consultant in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine, Whipps Cross University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, completes the speaker lineup, along with patient keynote Mr Ian Henderson who will share his lived experience.
