Effective communication among healthcare professionals is a simple but powerful tool to drive change. In this episode, we will explore the importance of referrals and handovers. 

Dr Charles Coughlan, an Internal Medicine Trainee at UCLH, will discuss the importance of effective clinical handovers and how to improve them. Learn about structured tools, such as SBAR, that can help to facilitate safe handovers, involving patients and carers, and the potential impact of QI projects on handovers in hospital and community settings.

This series is organised in association with the Patient Safety Section and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM).

Speaker's biography

Dr Charles Coughlan is a junior doctor working in London, with interests in medical education, infectious diseases and quality improvement across whole systems. He has previously developed a quality improvement education pilot for students at the University of Cambridge and published articles on quality improvement in journals such as BMC Medical Education and the British Medical Journal.
