Caroline Swash ATD FMGP will show a wide range of examples of this architectural art, by some of the most interesting artists working during the 1950s onwards. Perhaps a few names will be familiar: John Piper, Patrick Reyntiens and Lawrence Lee for their work in the rebuilt new Coventry Cathedral and Prince Charles’ favourite artist John Napper with his windows in The Chapel Royal at St James’ Palace.
As a practising member of a stained glass ‘family’ and tutor at Central Saint Martins, Caroline has had the pleasure of finding and researching some of the most interesting works of art in this genre in and around the City of London.
One of the joys of stained glass is that it’s in use in Churches, a semi-public space, at least in London - Though it’s usually wise to check before you visit. Stained glass is a unique craft in the sense that the artwork is designed as an essential part of the building. It is an architectural art as well as a craft. It is also very different from the world of painting in which the enthusiast must mostly be content with books and exhibitions.
