Professor Iqbal Singh CBE, recently co-chaired an independent review into the General Medical Council (GMC)’s handling of the case of Dr Arora. It followed a backlash from the profession against the GMC’s “cultural ignorance and absence of common sense” for suspending the GP for the word “promise” she used in asking her employer for a laptop. He will discuss the learning and the recommendations of this review and the need to implement these swiftly and for 21st-century regulation to be compassionate, supportive, proportionate and a culture that is fair and caring and focuses on local resolution first.
Professor Singh has broad experience in medical and healthcare regulation. He was an adviser to the Secretary of State on the creation of CHAI and the founder Commissioner of the Healthcare Commission. He chaired the Expert Group on Safety, developing standards for safety assessment in healthcare and indicators for regulating ethnic health.
He is recognised as a leader in promoting race equality in healthcare and organisations, having delivered fairer outcomes, including in his roles on the Health Honours Committee and the Cabinet Office Honours, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards (ACCEA), and the GMC’s Equality and Diversity Committee.
He is currently Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Bolton. He also chairs the Centre of Excellence Safety of Older People, improving care through a programme of education and training for health and social care professionals embedding, dignity, compassion, and respect. He is the Founder Chairman of the Centre for Remediation Support and Training (CRST), helping doctors with difficulty or enhanced learning needs and facilitating a safe return to practice. For doctors new to the UK, there is a focus on ensuring and helping international medical graduates integrate into the NHS and the local communities.
