After qualifying at the Middlesex Hospital in 1967, Bernard Ribeiro embarked on his career in surgery. In 1979 he became a Consultant General Surgeon with a special interest in urology and colorectal surgery to Basildon Hospital, Essex. There he introduced the use of minimally invasive surgery to the Hospital and developed an advanced Laparoscopic Unit.
He was an examiner in Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons and to the Universities of London, Oxford and Brighton. His interest in undergraduate teaching and examination contributed to the Trust achieving University status in 2002.
In 2004 he was awarded the CBE for services to medicine, and in 2009 he was appointed Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s New Year Honour’s List.
He was President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland from 1999-2000 and the Royal College of Surgeons from 2005-2008 and retired in the same year from Basildon University Hospital.
He is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Bath and is a Patron of the Royal College of Surgeons.
In December 2010 he was appointed The Lord Ribeiro of Achimota in the Republic of Ghana and of Ovington in the County of Hampshire.
Lord Ribeiro’s previous posts also include; Chairman of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel – an advisory body to the Secretary of State for Health (2012-2019), member of the EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee in the House of Lords (2015-19), and member of the Select Committee on the Long-Term Sustainability of the NHS and Adult Social Care (2015-16). Currently his is President of Dean Close School, Cheltenham, a member of Royal College of Surgeons Independent Review of Diversity and Inclusion, a Commissioner to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, and the Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University.
