Loyd Grossman CBE, writer, TV presenter and food critic will be joining Professor Roger Kirby (RSM President) for a fascinating discussion about his career, his time on MasterChef and Through the Keyhole, his love for heritage and art history and his "lively and informative" new book An Elephant in Rome: Bernini, The Pope and The Making of the Eternal City

Instead of charging for this webinar we are asking people to support the Royal Society of Medicine in these unprecedented times. Now more than ever, we need your help to continue our work. Please consider making a donation for watching this webinar. Thank you for your generosity.

After starting a career in journalism Loyd was diverted into television where, as a writer, presenter or deviser he was involved in a wide range of programmes, including the hugely popular Through the Keyhole and MasterChef.

Loyd’s knowledge of and fascination with food led him to create his own cooking sauce brand in 1995, which became Britain’s most successful new premium food brand.

Loyd has always had a deep fondness and been involved in heritage and art history which led him to pen An Elephant in Rome: Bernini, The Pope and The Making of the Eternal City. His love of Rome was kindled by his first encounter with the enigmatic and strangely beautiful monument to this relationship between artist and pope: the elephant carrying on obelisk outside Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, just behind the Pantheon. Written with this as a starting point, An Elephant in Rome is a book for those who love the endless fascination of the Eternal City and want a deeper and more entertaining tale of how it came to be.

Loyd is Chairman of The Royal Parks and Chairman of Gresham College and was Chairman of the Heritage Alliance, Chairman of the Churches Conservation Trust, Chairman of the University for the Creative Arts, Deputy Chairman of The Royal Drawing School and a member of the Court of Governors of the LSE. He is a Governor of the British Institute in Florence, Trustee of The Warburg Charitable Trust, a Governor of Compton Verney and President of The Arts Society.

He is Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars, an Honorary Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers, a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, a Junior Warden of the Carpenters’ Company, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He was appointed CBE in recognition of his services to Heritage. Loyd is a keen guitarist and he and his band – The New Forbidden – made their eighth appearance at Glastonbury in June 2019.
