A former Government lawyer, Shami was the Director of Liberty (The National Council for Civil Liberties) from 2003 to 2016. She campaigned For the defence and promotion of human rights values in Parliament, the Courts and wider society. In this role she frequently contributed to BBC Radio 4 and various newspapers, and was described in The Times as "probably the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the past 20 years".
She has been the Chancellor of Oxford Brookes and of Essex University and a Governor of the British Film Institute. She was a member of the panel of the Leveson Inquiry, the judicial inquiry into UK phone hacking in 2011 and one of eight bearers of the Olympic Flag at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Summer Olympics. She chaired the Baileys Prize for Womens’ Fiction in 2015.
She is the author of two books: On Liberty (2014) and Of Women (2017). Both are published by Penguin- Allen Lane.
