The highly respected Dr Fiona Donald, will give a keynote lecture, providing insights from her unique position as President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Before Dr Donald’s lecture there will be the annual Anaesthesia medical student and trainee prize presentations, followed by the RSM Anaesthesia Section AGM.

Dr Donald qualified from Bristol University in 1985 and trained in anaesthetics in Bristol, the southwest, Oxford and Geneva from 1987-97. She was appointed as a Consultant at Southmead Hospital in Bristol in 1997. Fiona's main area of clinical and research interest is obstetric anaesthesia concentrating on improvements in safety through team training.

She has a longstanding commitment to teaching and training, having been College Tutor, Chair of the Board of the Bristol School of Anaesthesia and an FRCA examiner.

As well as the lecture from Dr Donald, attendees will hear from the winners of the 2022 Anaesthesia student and trainee prizes who will present their original research, audit/case reports, quality improvement projects and systemic reviews.

For those attending in person, there will be drinks reception followed by an optional black-tie dinner, for networking with the other delegates and speakers.

Open to: Medical students at recognised teaching institutions in the UK

Application guidelines: Submit an essay describing original research, audit or a case report that you have played an important part in. The paper must

be anonymous; it should not include headings, acknowledgements, names or institutions.

Trainee Essay Prize

Deadline: 22 May 2022at 11:59pm

Open to: Trainee doctors in anaesthesia, critical care or pain management at any grade, including veterinary anaesthesia. Open to trainees in the UK and Ireland

Application guidelines: Submit an essay describing original research, audit or a case report that you have played an important part in. The paper must be anonymous; it should not include headings, acknowledgements, names or institutions. Shortlisted finalists/candidates will be required to present their paper at the Student and trainee prize meeting and annual dinner in July 2022.

Open to: Trainees and medical students

Application guidelines: Submit an essay describing original research, quality improvement projects, systemic review or other pieces of work (not a case report), in which you are one of the first 3 authors. This can be on any topic of your choosing, with relevance to anaesthesia.

Open to: Trainees and medical students

Application guidelines: Submit an essay describing original research, quality improvement projects or systemic review, or other pieces of work
