Rachel Hargest is a colorectal surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales and a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University.
Her special interests include colorectal and anal cancer, genetic disorders which predispose to colorectal cancer, and intestinal failure for which her team in Cardiff won the British Medical Journal Gastroenterology Team of the Year Award in 2015.
In 2012, she led the colorectal team at University Hospital of Wales that won the NHS Award for improving patient care for introducing an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programme for patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer.
Miss Hargest is a Royal College of Surgeon representative on the Advisory Appointments Committees. She is also a member of the Cardiff China Medical Research Collaborative (CCMRC), where she supervises both MD and PhD students.
In 2017 she won the Silver Scalpel Award for the best surgical trainer in the United Kingdom, awarded by the Association of Surgeons in Training.
