Selection process for President and Trustees

Serving as President or Trustee of the RSM is both a privilege and a responsibility. These roles offer a unique opportunity to shape the Society’s future, uphold its values, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of healthcare and education. We encourage applications from members across all specialties and backgrounds. Diversity of thought and experience strengthens our governance and enriches our community.

Initial Meeting with the President
Before applying, all prospective candidates must meet with the current President. This conversation is essential to:

  • Understand the scope and expectations of the role
  • Clarify the time commitment and responsibilities
  • Ensure alignment with the Society’s mission and governance culture

Following this meeting, eligible candidates will receive the official application form.

Standing for President
The President serves as the public face of the RSM, chairs Council meetings, and works closely with the Chief Executive and Trustees to guide strategic direction. It’s a role that demands vision, leadership, and dedication.

Time commitment:

The role of President is a significant time commitment. Overall it requires 2-3 days a week, but this varies depending on the schedule of meetings and events. Although meetings are often held online, physical presence of the President in London is an important part of the role. The time commitment includes:

  • Chairing Council, which meets at least four times a year
  • Attending committees, which meet two to four times annually with additional meetings as needed
  • Supporting the Trustees and performing their annual appraisals
  • Weekly meetings with the Chief Executive
  • Hosting a range of events and meetings with potential funders, stakeholders and others with an interest in the Society
  • Reading papers and following through on actions
  • Attending training on the role of a trustee

Application Requirements:

  • One proposer and two seconders (must be Fellows, Associates, Honorary Fellows, or Trustees)
  • A current CV
  • A personal statement (max. 500 words) outlining your motivation and vision
  • A five-minute video pitch (for shortlisted candidates)

Eligibility Criteria:
Candidates must:

  • Be a Fellow of the RSM for at least five continuous years
  • Be of good standing
  • Have experience in governance and chairing boards or committees
  • Distinctions such as prior service to the Society are desirable but not essential

Selection Process:
Applications are reviewed by a Nominations Panel comprising:

  • The current President
  • The Chief Executive
  • The Chair of the Audit, Risk and Governance Committee
  • Shortlisted candidates will proceed to election, with their video and statement shared with voting members.

Standing for Trustee (Council Member)
Trustees form the governing body of the RSM and act in accordance with the Charities Act 2011. They help shape policy, oversee financial stewardship, and support the Society’s educational mission.

Time Commitment:

  • Council meets at least four times a year
  • Committees meet two to four times annually, with additional meetings as needed
  • Trustees are expected to read papers, attend meetings, and follow through on actions. They will be provided with regular training on the role of a trustee.

Meetings are held at 1 Wimpole Street, London, or online.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must:

  • Be a Fellow of the RSM
  • Be of good standing
  • Experience in governance and sitting on boards or committees is desirable but not essential.

Application Requirements:

  • One proposer and one seconder (must be Fellows, Associate Members, Honorary Fellows or Trustees)
  • A personal statement
  • Written consent from the candidate
  • A brief biographical note, including relationship to the nominee

Submitting Your Application

  • All applications for President and trustees must be completed in full and submitted electronically
  • E-signatures are accepted; however, email endorsements are not
  • Applications missing required signatures will not be considered
