Mr Stephen Ali is an ST8 plastic and reconstructive surgery registrar at the Welsh Centre for Burns & Plastic Surgery and an Academic Clinical Lecturer at Swansea University Medical School. His clinical interests include hand, peripheral nerve and orthoplastic reconstruction, while his research focuses on applying artificial intelligence and big data analytics to surgical decision-making. Stephen has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers and was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons’ Hunterian Professorship in 2024 for his work on large language model–driven virtual multidisciplinary team platforms.

With support from the Ellison-Cliffe Travelling Fellowship, Stephen will travel to Sydney, Australia to undertake advanced subspecialty training in hand and peripheral nerve surgery at the Department of Hand Surgery & Peripheral Nerve Surgery, Royal North Shore Hospital. The unit is one of Australia’s leading tertiary and quaternary referral centres for complex upper-limb reconstruction. During his placement, Stephen will gain intensive, mentored experience in brachial plexus reconstruction, tetraplegic hand reconstruction and targeted muscle reinnervation.
