About this event

  • Date and time Thu 16 Jul 2026 from 8:00am to 17 Jul 2026 at 5:55pm
  • Location Royal Society of Medicine
  • Organised by Surgery

Modern surgical practice demands more than operative skill. It requires reflective thinking, ethical leadership and the resilience to adapt in a fast-changing healthcare system. Surgical excellence requires a defined professional identity - a surgeon’s mindset - developed during training and refined throughout an entire career.

This two-day meeting explores how surgeons evolve: from trainee to leader, from technical competence to strategic influence. It brings together aspiring surgeons, established experts and international voices to examine how we train, adapt and innovate in an era shaped by digital health, system reform and rising expectations.

The programme combines keynote lectures, prize presentations, panel discussions and debate. Together, we will examine how incremental improvements, reflective practice and interdisciplinary collaboration drive measurable progress in surgical standards and patient outcomes. Stay ahead of the digital curve, healthcare integration, AI applications and leverage this in research, surgical practice and patient care. This is a forward-looking meeting for those committed to shaping the future of surgery.

Why attend?

  • Develop the Surgeon’s Mindset - understand the attitudes, behaviours and decision-making frameworks that define surgical excellence.
  • Gain clarity on training pathways, fellowships and career progression and learn how to strategically map your professional development.
  • Engage in critical discussions on current challenges including professionalism, inclusivity, digital innovation and leadership.
  • Explore how resilience, behavioural insight and reflective practice contribute to sustainable surgical careers.
  • Hear from nationally and internationally recognised leaders in surgical training and practice.
  • Celebrate excellence through prestigious prize presentations recognising emerging and established talent.

Aims of the event:

This meeting aims to:
