  • Location Royal Society of Medicine

Join us for our upcoming free debate on Monday 29 June 2026 as we consider the motion:

This house believes it is advantageous for doctors to have a social media presence.”

Social media has become one of the primary spaces in which the public gathers information and forms opinions about health, medicine and healthcare professionals. Yet the role of doctors in this space remains contested.

Should medical professionals engage publicly online to challenge misinformation, improve health literacy and strengthen trust? Or does maintaining a visible social media presence risk blurring professional boundaries, undermining integrity and exposing individuals to reputational or personal harm?

This timely debate brings together expert speakers to explore how a doctor’s online presence may influence public understanding and humanise the profession — while also examining the potential impact on professional ethics, identity and wellbeing. At its core, the discussion asks whether occupying digital spaces represents a professional responsibility or an unnecessary risk.

Attendees will have the opportunity to share their views, vote on the motion and consider alternative perspectives. By drawing on the collective insight of the audience, the debate aims to enrich and advance this important conversation.

Learning outcomes:

  • Analyse the arguments for and against doctors actively engaging on social media.
  • Discuss how doctors can develop a professional online identity, supported by appropriate guidance and governance.
  • Evaluate whether the potential risks of a public social media presence outweigh the benefits.

Who should attend?

  • Doctors and healthcare professionals across all specialties.
  • Educators and trainers.
  • Anyone with an interest in the evolving role of social media in healthcare.

The Royal Society of Medicine is proud to continue its tradition of fostering balanced, informed discussion on significant issues in medicine. Expand your understanding, challenge assumptions and leave equipped to contribute thoughtfully to the future of social media in healthcare.
