About this event

  • Date and time Wed 30 Jul 2025 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm
  • Location Online

The independent Leng Review brought together national and international evidence, alongside insights from professionals, patients, the public, employers, and researchers, to build a comprehensive understanding of the physician associate (PA) and anaesthesia associate (AA) roles.

Professor Gillian Leng CBE independently led the review, which was separate from her role as RSM President. The review assessed whether PAs and AAs are being safely and effectively integrated into multidisciplinary NHS teams. It also examined how their introduction across England has supported patient care and what changes are needed to strengthen trust in these roles.

This spotlight session will focus on the next steps: how we will implement the review’s recommendations. Rather than revisiting the report in detail, we will explore what needs to happen now and what the future healthcare team should look like in light of these findings.

By attending the session, you will:

  • Understand the review’s key findings and recommendations
  • Explore what happens next and take the review’s recommendations forward
  • Engage in a respectful and constructive conversation, participating in the Q&A

Join this session to gain exclusive insight into the aftermath of the Leng Review on the physician associate and anaesthesia associate professions.

Speaker's biography

Professor Gillian Leng CBE is a clinician by background, with a passion for using evidence to improve care. Professor Leng joined NICE, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, in 2001 to establish its clinical guidelines programme.  In 2020, she became only its second CEO.  She led the development of a new 5 year strategy and set out updated methods and processes to put NICE at the forefront of evaluating new technologies and to deliver dynamic living guidelines for frontline staff.

Her career has covered a breadth of sectors including wider public health, healthcare, education and social care. It has entailed close working with the life science industries, patient organisations, professional societies, academia, plus local and national government across the United Kingdom. She has chaired national and international boards and committees, bringing comprehensive media experience across a range of complex topics.

She is now the President at the Royal Society of Medicine, with a number of other non-executive roles.  She retains her interest in the use of high quality evidence and is a trustee of the Cochrane Collaboration and an executive committee member of Alive, the international Alliance for Living Evidence.
