Professor Charles Knight OBE, MA BM BCh MD FRCP FESC FACC, Consultant Cardiologist, Professor of Cardiology, and Chief Executive of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, will be joining Professor Roger Kirby, RSM President, for a conversation about his career, how he led the development of the largest cardiac centre in the UK, his professional experience of the COVID-19 pandemic and the pressures of directing London’s most talked about hospital, the NHS Nightingale Hospital.

Professor Knight trained at Cambridge and Oxford Universities and is a Consultant Cardiologist and is an Honorary Professor at the William Harvey Research Institute at Queen Mary University of London.

From 2010 he led the development of the Barts Heart Centre by merging cardiac services from across London to create the largest cardiac centre in the UK. He became the Centre’s first Executive Director in 2014, and in 2015 he was appointed as Managing Director and then Chief Executive of St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

From 2008 to 2011 he was Honorary Secretary of the British Cardiovascular Society, the professional body for UK Cardiologists and other healthcare workers with an interest in cardiovascular medicine.

Professor Knight is past head of Cardiology training in London as Chair of the London Cardiology Specialty Training Committee and was a member of the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Advisory Committee. He was also the Associate Editor of Heart journal, the UK’s leading cardiovascular journal.

His research interests include acute coronary syndromes, renal and cardiac disease, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, in which he has published over 100 scientific papers. He is regularly invited to lecture at national and international meetings.

In March 2020 Professor Knight was seconded as Chief Executive of the NHS Nightingale Hospital London, established to care for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2020, he was awarded the Freedom of the City of London by invitation of the Lord Mayor in acknowledgement of the outstanding role he had played in the pandemic. And in October 2020 he was awarded an OBE for services to the NHS and people with heart disease.
