Join the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) History of Medicine Section for this hybrid evening event exploring the history and evolution of arm transplantation - one of the most extraordinary achievements in modern reconstructive and transplant surgery.

The evening features presentations from three Norah Schuster Prize winners, followed by the Bynum Lecture delivered by Professor Fay Bound Alberti, Professor of Modern History at King's College London and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow. Named in honour of distinguished medical historian Professor William ("Bill") Bynum, the lecture promotes excellence in historical scholarship and recognises outstanding contributions to the field. The Norah Schuster Prize recognises outstanding contributions to the history of medicine, awarded in memory of Norah H. Schuster (1892–1991), a distinguished pathologist and historian.

Why attend?

  • Hear the prestigious Bynum Lecture delivered by Professor Fay Bound Alberti, Professor of Modern History, King's College London, whose research spans the cultural and ethical history of transplantation, bodily identity and facial reconstruction
  • Gain a historical perspective on arm transplantation,  from early experimental procedures to contemporary vascularised composite allotransplantation
  • Hear presentations from three Norah Schuster Prize winners
  • Explore the ethical, rehabilitative and human dimensions of limb transplantation beyond its surgical and scientific aspects
  • Continue the discussion over an optional dinner following the event, available to pre-registered delegates

Aims of the event

  • To explore the historical development and major milestones in arm transplantation and reconstructive transplantation surgery
  • To examine the scientific, surgical, ethical and rehabilitative challenges associated with arm transplantation
  • To promote interdisciplinary understanding of the future directions of vascularised composite allotransplantation, regenerative medicine and advanced reconstructive therapies

Learning outcomes

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the major historical milestones in arm transplantation and their contribution to modern reconstructive and transplant surgery
  • Evaluate the scientific, surgical, ethical and rehabilitative challenges associated with vascularised composite allotransplantation
