Sarah Hughes Memorial Lecture

Sarah Hughes, a journalist, died from breast cancer on Easter Monday 2021 at the age of 48. Her family and friends have raised funds for an annual lecture to be held under the auspices of the RSM History of Medicine Society.

Sarah was a history graduate from St Andrews University and was fascinated by, studied and wrote about the human condition in all its manifestations, good or bad, real or imagined. Medicine in its broad historical sense is a study of mankind, the science of human life and wellbeing.

The inaugural Sarah Hughes Lecture will be delivered by Jed Mercurio OBE, the renowned television writer, producer, director and novelist. Amongst his many productions are the internationally acclaimed series Line of Duty, Bloodlands and Bodies, a dark medical drama series. Jed Mercurio is a former medical practitioner and will be in conversation with Victoria Macdonald, the Health and Social Care Editor of Channel 4 News. Victoria MacDonald, an award-winning journalist, has been covering health and social care issues for Channel 4 News since 1999.

• Understand the importance of the humanities in studying and evaluating the human condition
• Learn how the performing arts can be applied to contemporary clinical practice
• Discuss ways in which knowledge of the humanities as expressed in the media can influence and affect medical practice as we know it
