As medical innovation continues to evolve through advances in basic sciences, diagnostics and therapeutic techniques, understanding the mechanisms that drive ageing has become critical in improving health outcomes for older adults. The Royal Society of Medicine's Geriatrics & Gerontology Section annual flagship webinar, Biology of Ageing, returns with a focused exploration of the biological processes behind ageing and the advancing research shaping the next generation of medical interventions. From novel drugs and vaccines to emerging treatment protocols, the programme will examine how recent discoveries are transforming both research and clinical practice in care for older people.

This full-day webinar brings together expert speakers to deliver updates on the latest developments in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect older people. Drawing on emerging research and evolving clinical approaches, the programme will investigate the relationship between biological ageing, frailty and patient care, with a strong emphasis on improving both lifespan and quality of life. As research and clinical practice progress, this webinar delivers a rare, forward-looking update on emerging areas of older adult care often overlooked, including eye health, metabolic and endocrine conditions and perioperative care - offering clinicians insights they are unlikely to find in other CPD events.

Why attend?

  • Receive a clear overview of the stages in ageing, from a cellular and system level, including how ageing affects the presentation of diseases in older people.
  • Gain expert insights from leading national speakers, including Professor Paul UrsellProfessor Claire StevesDr Steve Hyer and Dr Karina James.
  • Participate in live discussions and lectures covering age-related conditions, cellular ageing, perioperative and metabolic medicine, ophthalmology and neurology.

Aims of the event

  • To provide multidisciplinary teams with an evidence-based update on the biology of ageing on older people.
  • To enable appraisal of evolving clinical practice through expert-led sessions and shared learning.
  • To support attendees professionally by providing them with actionable insights, up-to-date knowledge and opportunities to build expertise in geriatrics and gerontology.

Learning objectives

  • Describe the cellular and system-level mechanisms of ageing and explain how age-related changes influence disease presentation in older adults.
  • Evaluate current and emerging research, biological mechanisms and clinical developments relevant to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting older adults, including underrepresented areas such as eye health, perioperative medicine and longevity science.
  • Apply up-to-date evidence to the diagnosis and management of key conditions affecting older people, including metabolic and endocrine disorders, stroke, dementia, delirium and Parkinson's disease.

This webinar is particularly relevant to:

  • Geriatricians.
  • Specialist Registrars (SpRs) and GPs.
  • Resident doctors.
