About this section

The Hypnosis & Psychosomatic Medicine Section’s purpose is to promote the knowledge and understanding of hypnosis and psychosomatic medicine.

All meetings and events run by this Section are open to anyone with an interest in hypnosis or psychosomatic medicine, however Section membership comprises professionals who fulfil the eligibility criteria. Training meetings are open only to professionals or students who fulfil the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility criteria

Those eligible to join this section must hold a first or higher degree in a relevant discipline such as medicine, dentistry or fields related to psychology and be employed in, or retired from, a health-related field such as medicine, psychology, dentistry or nursing.

Applications are invited from those registered with, for example, the BABCP, GMC, GDC, NMC, HCPC and university-based academics.

The Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine Section is a constituent society of the European Society of Hypnosis. We support and endorse its Ethical Guidelines, and which all applications for membership of the Section will need to abide by.

Open to

Trainees in hypnosis (those who are undertaking a training course, and those who are within one year of completing their course)

  • Clinical trainees in medicine, dentistry nursing or psychological fields
  • Students enrolled in related graduate academic courses
  • Those qualified in medicine, dentistry nursing or those in psychological fields

Shortlisted applicants must be available to attend the prize meeting and to present their submission on 4 April 2022.   

Application guidelines

Entrants are invited to submit a case study or an essay of no more than 1000 - 1500 words in response to the following question: “Discuss the rationale for the use of the term hypnosis or hypnotherapy.”

For professionals working in the healthcare sector or with an interest in healthcare issues and do not qualify for a Fellow membership. 



For students studying medicine, dentistry or an undergraduate qualification in a healthcare-related subject, in the UK or overseas.
