1. Logging into the RSM website

a. I ’m an RSM member and experiencing a problem trying to log onto the website. What steps should I take?

As the website now links into our membership database we need to make sure that your access is secure and the steps you need to go through are:

  1. Visit the Login page and type either your membership number (the full number including any leading zeros) OR your email address in the “Login“ box.
  2. When entering your email address please do make sure you use the email that we hold for you in your membership record (this is the email we use to send you communications about upcoming meetings, renewal notices etc.). It is important not to create a duplicate record using a different email address so if in doubt contact our membership team to check that we have the right email address for you.
  3. Enter your password which is a word of your devising. If you have forgotten your password or if this is the first time you have visited the site then click on the “forgotten password” link and you will then be sent an email to the address that we hold for you with a temporary password for you to use. You can then change to your own choice of password. Keep this secret. The RSM does not have access to this information.
  4. Once you have gone through this process you can then select your security question and begin to check the information that is linked to your record – adding any missing information or updating this as required.

b. I’m an RSM member and when I click on “forgotten password” link I don’t receive anything further from you – what is wrong?

It is likely that the problem is caused by the RSM holding your primary (preferred) email address but this being different to the one you have used to log into the website. In this case you would not receive the “forgotten password” email as it would not go to the same email address.

If in doubt please contact the membership team to check which email address is the primary one in use on your membership account.

c. I’m not an RSM member and need advice on how to register to use the website. Please can you advise me?

Here are the steps you need to action:

1. Visit the Login page then complete the “Registration” part of this webpage.

FAQ1

2. Enter a security question and answer to the question and click continue, you will then be sent an email with a link to complete your registration.

FAQ2

3. When you click the email link you’re then sent to a page to enter a password. Simply provide the answer to your security question (set in step 2) and a password with at least 1 capital letter, 1 lower case letter, and 1 number.

FAQ3

4. The registration process should now be complete

FAQ4

Note: if you have previously booked to attend RSM meetings and are using the same email address this should link up with your record and show you a list of past meeting attendances.

When revisiting the website take a few minutes to add in your specialty interests so that we can send you relevant information in the future.

2. Accessing JRSM

a. I’m an RSM member and want to access full articles from the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine - how can I do this?

In order to access the full text of all articles from the Journal please take the following steps:

  1. Visit the website and login
  2. Then go to the educational resources page
  3. Then click onto the “e-journals” link
  4. This takes you through to the database of journals and then type in “Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine” where you will be given a choice of links and issues to explore further.

3. Accessing online resources

a. As an RSM member I should be able to view the e-journals and videos etc. but although I was able to access these previously the links don’t seem to be working now. What is the problem?

In most cases this is due to the fact that you have changed your email address after logging into the website.

The revised synchronisation with our member database takes place overnight and you should find that within 24 hours of changing your email that you will once again have access to member only resources.

If you still find this is a problem please contact us.

4. Joining Sections as an RSM member

a. Am I automatically enrolled into the Sections that I choose to join on the website?

In most cases the answer is yes. However for the areas of Dermatology and Hypnosis and Psychosomatic medicine there are specific criteria that need to be fulfilled in order to join the Section.

You can view these here:

Dermatology Section eligibility criteria

Hypnosis and Psychosomatic medicine Section eligibility criteria

If you feel that you are eligible to join please do add the appropriate Section selection to your membership record online.

In addition please email membership with information that supports your Section membership application. We will then advise you if your application to join one of these Sections has been successful.

b. I am a retired member of the RSM and wish to join the Retired Fellows’ Society, how do I do this?

The easiest way to do this is to call the membership team on 020 7290 2991 or email the membership team and they can arrange this for you. There is a small additional membership fee of £20 (as at June 2014) which is payable annually. Both Retired Fellows and Retired Associates are eligible to join the Society.

5. Booking for RSM events

a. When I book other people to attend RSM events with me I need to give their individual email addresses – why is this?

The reason why the website asks for an email address when you book your guests to attend an event is so that if they want to create their own account using the same email address, they will be recognised as existing users of the RSM and their record will show them any events they have previously attended.

b. Why isn’t there a dietary option of “Kosher” food at events?

The RSM does not have a kitchen set up to meet the requirements for kosher food. We have previously tried to “buy in “ this from external specialist caterers for delegates but the cost is prohibitive at nearly £100 a meal for provision and delivery and we are unable to provide this as an option.

6. Joining the RSM

a. I’d like to join the Royal Society of Medicine but can’t access the application form online – what do I need to do?

There is a 3 step process to do this:

  1. Register on the website (more information on registering is in a previous question)
  2. Then log into the website and visit “your account details” page and click on the “join now” button on the right hand side of the page
  3. This will take you to the “membership chooser” page where you can follow the instructions to join.

7. Watching RSM videos

a. How can I add CPD after I've watched a video?

After you have finished watching your video (or after you have viewed over 20 minutes of your video), a window will appear on screen stating “You are now able to proceed to the next stage of the CPD module whenever you are ready”. Click on the CPD module button (or if you have not yet finished watching the video and wish to do so, click continue watching).

If you do not have an annual CPD subscription you will be asked to pay for the CPD linked to the video.

To purchase CPD for your video click the start CPD button.

Once you have paid for the CPD you will be redirected back to the video page. from here select the CPD tab below the video and slides. You should now be able to access the CPD portion of the video, again once you have watched at least 20 minutes of the video you will be able to access and complete the reflective notes, followed by the evaluation. Once you have completed the process, you can download or print a CPD credit certificate, and you can access your CPD records at any time via the My CPD section (you will need to be logged in to your account to access 'My CPD').

b. I am an RSM member. How do I add annual online CPD to my membership?

At the moment if you wish to add this to your subscription please contact the membership team who will organise this for you – it is £95 at renewal for a 12 month access or this can be provided on a pro rata basis if it is during your membership year. Email membership or call 020 7290 2991. We hope to have this as an automatic option at renewal in the next few months when renewing online.

8. RSM accommodation

a. How do I book a room at Chandos House or at Domus Medica?

Simply log into the website and then visit club.

The good news is that you can now view availability and book online for both Chandos House and Domus Medica for yourself and your guests if you are an RSM member.

Non members of the RSM can also book online for Chandos House. However please note that the room rates are higher than those for members and you might want to consider joining the RSM to save money in the longer term – plus access all the other benefits of membership.
