This meeting covers the basic principles and skills required for the recognition and management of the critically ill. It also introduces the concepts of organ support in intensive care setting. The material is suitable for trainees new to intensive care medicine.

Outline of the afternoon workshops (Groups of 5-7 rotation)

Basic management of invasive airway devices including ET tubes and tracheostomies

Basic ventilation methods and settings
(Practical session on mechanical ventilation)

USS guided central vascular access
(USS guided vessel localization and Seldinger technique)

Renal support in the ITU setting
(Indications, CVVH devices, vascular access, anti-coagulation and trouble shooting)

Cardiac output monitoring
(Commonly used devices and useful parameters to guide fluid, vasopressor and inotropic therapy)
