Increased risk of death for patients admitted to hospital at weekend but patients less likely to die in hospital at the weekend

Patients admitted to hospital at the weekend have a significant increased risk of death within 30 days of admission but the likelihood of patients dying in hospital is less at the weekend than during the week. These are the results of research published today in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine (JRSM) that analysed all 14.2 million admissions to NHS hospitals in England during the 12 months from April 2009 to March 2010.
