JOHN HUNTER
(1728 – 1793)

This item was presented to the Society by Charles Hawkins, probably in the 1880s.
The front endpaper of the book bears a stamp reading: J. MELLIAR 1782.

Melliar is presumably the name of the student who took the notes, possibly in shorthand to be subsequently written out in full.

This item is on display in the Library of the Royal Society of Medicine as part of an exhibition of books by and about the surgeon and anatomist John Hunter (1728 – 1793).

Focusing on Hunter's four most famous works on the natural history of the human teeth, on venereal disease, on certain parts of the animal oeconomy, and on the blood, inflammation, and gunshot wounds, the exhibition also includes books by his nephew Matthew Baillie and his brother-in-law Everard Home.

The exhibition is open to the public and will run from November 4th until January 3rd 2012.
