Winners Announced of The Society of Authors and the Royal Society of Medicine Book Awards 2002

Winners of the Society of Authors and the Royal Society of Medicine Book Awards 2002 were presented with their prizes by Rabbi Julia Neuberger at a ceremony on 30th October 2002 at the Royal Society of Medicine. The books were judged by the Medical Writers Group of the Society of Authors.

The £1,200 prize for a first edition textbook by up to three authors was Annika Isberg for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction: A Practitioner's Guide (Isis Medical Media).

The £1,200 prize for a first edition edited textbook was awarded to Mary Rutherford for MRI of the Neonatal Brain (W.B. Saunders).

The £1,200 Asher prize for a first medical textbook for students, sponsored anonymously, jointly to Alastair M. Thompson for General Surgical Anatomy and Examination (Churchill Livingstone) and Roderick Nairn and Matthew Helbert for Immunology for Medical Students (Mosby).

The RSM Library Prize of £1,200 for a first edition textbook priced less than £50 was awarded to Wendy Abrams and Siân Howell for The GP Registrar Survival Guide (BIOS Scientific Publishers Limited).

The £600 prize for a first edition medical history book Penelope Hunting for The History of the Royal Society of Medicine (Royal Society of Medicine Press).

The £1,000 inaugural Minty Prize of the Medico-Legal Society for a medico-legal book, sponsored by the Medico-Legal Society, was awarded to Michael Foy and Phillip Fagg for Medicolegal Reporting in Orthopaedic Trauma, 3rd edition (Churchill Livingstone).

The £1,200 prize for a second or subsequent edition textbook was awarded to Roderick N.M. MacSween, Alastair D. Burt, Bernard C. Portmann, Kamal G. Ishak, Peter J. Scheuer, and Peter P. Anthony for Pathology of the Liver, 4th edition (Churchill Livingstone).

The £600 prize for a website aimed at medical professionals was awarded to Louise Crowe for www.fleshandbones.com (Elsevier Science).

This book tells the story of the Royal Society of Medicine from its origins in 1805 when leading members of the Medical Society of London decided to found a society "for the purpose of conversation on professional subjects, for the reception of communications and for the formation of a library." For nearly 200 years the Society has pursued academic objectives to the benefit of the medical profession and the public, and has stood as a unifying force in the face of rapid specialization of medicine.
Penelope Hunting graduated with an Honours degree in history from London University in 1969, followed by a PhD in architectural history. She has written articles, booklets and over a dozen books on architectural history, the history of London and its livery companies. Her History of Apothecaries (1998) led to the commission for this book. Dr Hunting is on the Council of the London Topographical Society and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1996.

This book is the story of a young Australian anaesthetist's service in the Vietnam War. It is prefaced by the author's account of growing up in Brisbane during the Pacific war and his pre-war training. During his tour Major Barr spent time with the Australian Task Force, with civilian teams and with American units. His work at the Australian Field Hospital is graphically described. Based on the author's personal diary, the book has a startling immediacy which is complemented by reflections matured over three decades.
Marshall Barr now lives in England where he has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and Honorary Editor of the History of Anaesthesia Society. He is co-author of a number of books on local medical history.
