Research Gate is a free online network designed for professional scientists and researchers, boasting a million members worldwide. Its various resources include science specific conference and job boards and a vast number of publications, including those with negative results, many of which are found nowhere else. Members can advertise conferences and post jobs, join in discussions and question specialists in specific topics. Organisations and groups of colleagues can also create online discussions specific to their work and areas of interest. The site covers all the sciences, but there is a large and thriving medical section, broken down into a large number of smaller sections representing narrower fields.

The resource is easy to navigate and intuitive to use, and the sign-up process is free and straightforward. Publications can be searched simply by keyword or source journal or browsed by topic. Once members have located an abstract or article of interest, they have the facility to discuss it with other researchers using a comments section. Conferences can be browsed by subject or geographical area and job adverts can be sought by searching or browsing by specialism.
