Loans:
Much of our collection is available for borrowing and all material removed from the Library must be issued by a Library staff member. Please bring your RSM membership card if you wish to borrow items from the Library.
- Fellows and members are entitled to borrow up to eight items at any one time.
- Books may be borrowed for 4 weeks and journals for 2.
- Postal loans are provided free of charge for packages weighing under 2kg. If an item is over 2kg then members will have to pay postage. Members are also liable for return postage if applicable. This is only for members who live in the UK and Ireland.
The borrower is personally responsible for the items on loan.
Loaned items may not be transferred from one borrower to another, but must be formally re-issued by Library staff.
Not all Library material is available for loan. Materials not for loan include:
- Reference material (will be marked as Reference).
- Items published before 1901
- Current journals: issues received in the last 12 months (the date when an issue becomes available for loan is marked on each journals cover).
There are loan copies available for current journal issues of the JRSM, Lancet, BMJ, NEJM, JAMA.
The Library may decide to decline to issue or restrict a loan either to protect a fragile or valuable item or to facilitate as wide access for as many readers as possible.
Please contact the Library if you wish to know whether an item can be loaned or not.
Overdue items:
If you do not renew or return the items on time then two reminder notices will be sent to you; by email if we have your address and by post if we do not.
If the items are not renewed or returned and we have not heard from you then a third letter is posted and is accompanied by an invoice for replacement of the items. The invoice includes an administration charge which is payable even if the items are subsequently returned.
If for any reason you are unable to return loan items on time, please contact us before the due date.
Returning Items:
It is the responsibility of the borrower to ensure the safe return of Library material.
All material must be returned no later than the due date indicated on the date sheet at the front of the book or journal.
Items returned by post should be adequately packaged and labelled and borrowers post at their own risk.
There is a book return box at the Library entrance for after-hours returns. Domus Reception on the ground floor of the building will also accept Library items.
Renewals:
All items may be renewed a maximum of 3 times. However, if the item is requested by another user then it will not be possible to renew it.
Contact us by email or by phone (020 7290 2940/2941) to renew the items.
Reservations:
If you wish to reserve an item that is on loan to another reader then please contact the Library on 020 7290 2940/2941 or email library @ rsm.ac.uk and library staff will put the hold on for you. You will be notified when the item is returned and will then have 2 weeks to collect it.
Recall of Loan items:
Loan items may be recalled at any time for use by another reader or at the discretion of the Customer Services Manager.
Items so recalled must be returned by the due date as indicated on the recall notice.
Materials requested in advance:
Readers may request material to be kept aside for collection from the Library for up to 10 days. To allow staff adequate time to prepare the material such requests should be made at least 2 days in advance to ensure availability.
Material that readers would like to look at again may be held aside for the readers for up to 10 days, these items should be left with Library staff rather than on desks around the Library.
It will be useful to set any junk mail filter you may have to accept the address library@rsm.ac.uk so that we will be able to contact you via email.
