Climate change and health: Action for the health consequences of climate change

There is now overwhelming evidence that global warming is rapidly progressing, and major climate changes are already being experienced in many parts of the world. This series of evening meetings at the Royal Society of Medicine aims to examine and forecast the effects on human health, with the intention of increasing awareness of the serious threat to our planet.

The series will start with two scene setting talks, the first dealing with the causes and timescale of global warming and the second an overview of the effects on human health. The next two sessions will examine the changing patterns of infectious disease in both humans and animals, and the critical issue of whether crop failure and changes in marine life will mean that much of the world will face starvation. On the last evening, the key issue of prevention will be considered including both the responsibilities of governments and those of individuals, and finally an assessment of the impact on health services and how we should prepare for changing patterns of disease.

Interactive discussion involving the audience will be encouraged at all these meetings.
