The London Cardiovascular Symposium 2010: From the aortic valve to the aortic bifurcation - Expanding the frontiers
Friday - Saturday 22 - 23 October 2010
Venue: The Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London, W1G 0AE
A joint meeting with University College London Hospitals Multidisciplinary Endovascular Team
Dear Colleagues,
Following last year's highly successful International Cardiovascular symposium, we invite you to join us again this year at the Royal Society of Medicine in central London on Friday and Saturday October 22nd and 23rd .
The focus of the meeting this time is the aorta "from, and including, the aortic valve to the aortic bifurcation". Leading experts from around the world will review the results and limitations of the treatments of today, will present early results of new and cutting edge technologies and will speculate about the treatments of tomorrow. Translational research is the key to a better future for our patients and there will be a session dedicated to exciting ideas under investigation with the London Academic Health Science Centres and their partner health research centers in the United States. There will be more also challenging case-reports to engender lively discussion and debate.
Whether you are in clinical practice as a cardiac or vascular surgeon, an interventional vascular radiologist or cardiologist; or if your interest lies in cardiovascular research, device engineering, genetics or pharmacotherapy; if you want to know what's good, bad, new and the future in respect of the management of complex aortic disease, or if you would like to express views of your own, why not come to learn and contribute.
We look forward to welcoming you
Peter Harris, Leader, UCLH MET
George Geroulakos, President, Vascular Medicine Section
Objectives of the symposium:
1. To provide an overview of current options, and insights into future options, for treatment of life-threatening diseases affecting the aorta, including the aortic valve.
2. To promote interdisciplinary collaboration directed towards scientific innovation and improved standards of patient care with the involvement of all specialists involved in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Format
* Short papers presented by leading authorities with a remit not only to inform but also to highlight issues for discussion and debate by symposium participants.
* All sessions multidisciplinary.
* Academic Health Sciences Centres translational cardiovascular research session on Saturday morning.
* Satellite symposia and commercial exhibition.
Who should attend?
Established specialists, trainees, basic scientists, device engineers and professionals allied to medicine in the fields of vascular and cardiac surgery, vascular interventional radiology, interventional cardiology, interventional neuroradiology, cardiology, neurology, vascular genetics, grown-up congenital heart disease.
Competences on offer:
Attendees will acquire knowledge and understanding of the following:
* Current treatments for diseases of the aorta and aortic valve, including endovascular and open surgery and non-interventional options: Results, benefits, limitations and controversies.
* Patient selection and technical tips and tricks for optimizing treatment outcomes.
* Techniques for protection of cerebral and spinal cord function during aortic interventions.
* Endovascular devices, including aortic valves for transcatheter implantation and aortic stent/grafts: Current and future designs, engineering considerations.
* Advances in understanding of basic science and translational research relevant to cardiovascular disease.
* Present and future options for gene therapy directed towards the prevention and treatment of vascular diseases.
* Options for overcoming the limitations of current treatment options, 'expanding the frontiers' and improving patient outcomes.
