Key advances in research and treatment of brain tumours
Wednesday 11 November 2009
Venue: The Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London, W1G 0AE
This one-day symposium on research and management of brain tumours is being held at an interval of three years following a very successful meeting on the same topic held at the Royal Society of Medicine in November 2006. Neuro-oncology is a rapidly advancing field, and the aim is again to bring together those active in basic and clinical research with all clinicians involved in the management of patients with brain tumours.
The programme attempts to provide a comprehensive update on the key advances in a variety of areas of research, both basic and clinical, which underpin developments in approaches to management. Topics examined will include cancer stem cells and the origins of astrocytomas. Molecular and imaging biomarkers will be discussed with specific reference to their relevance to patient stratification in clinical trials, the development of new treatments and assessment of treatment response in clinical practice. There will also be presentations on advances in surgical treatment, and advances in radiotherapy and radiobiology. The modern approach to the management of cerebral metastases will be examined; this has become an increasingly important topic as more and more patients with systemic cancers are developing cerebral metastatic disease, following the advent of new biological treatments. A presentation on advances in paediatric neuro-oncology aims to keep adult clinicians abreast of developments in childhood cerebral tumours. Finally, there will be consideration of the service developments for the treatment of patients with brain tumours, driven by the NICE Improving Outcomes Guidance document.
By the conclusion of the symposium, delegates will have gained a rounded, interdisciplinary view of the underlying neurobiology, and current approaches to the optimal clinical investigation and treatment of cerebral tumours.
This wide-ranging programme is designed to have broad appeal to all those involved in research and treatment of brain tumours. Those who should attend include basic neuroscientists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists, oncologists, trainees in all these specialties, palliative care physicians and specialist nurses.
