The RSM Gold Medal is awarded every three years to a scientist for valuable contributions towards the progress of Art and Science of Medicine, Preventive Medicine or Surgery either by original discoveries or by the practical application of the results of previous investigations of other scientists. Sir Martin was one of three individuals awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2007, for a series of ground-breaking discoveries concerning embryonic stem cells and DNA recombination in mammals. His discoveries are now being applied in virtually all areas of biomedicine, from basic research to development of new therapies.
