Dietary strategies for the management of cardiovascular risk
Tuesday - Wednesday 11 - 12 December 2012
Venue: Royal Society Of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, LONDON, W1G 0AE
organised by the Royal Society of Medicine and Nutrition Society
Background
Dietary modification has been the mainstay of therapeutic lifestyle changes for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) for many years, and now has an increasingly important role in the management cardio-metabolic risk associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. This meeting will begin with an overview of the current guidelines and policy for the dietary management of CVD risk. World leading experts in the field of human nutrition will then review and critically appraise the scientific evidence to link nutrients, foods and dietary patterns with cardiovascular health. The meeting will culminate with a summary, the aim of which will be to translate the conclusions from each topic into advice for future dietary guidelines.
Educational aims and objectives
A principal aim of this meeting will be to provide an update on the strength and quality of evidence for the most relevant associations between diet and CVD, and in the process, promote active debate on the role of diet in the management of CVD risk. A major challenge and learning outcome will be to increase understanding of how evidence based nutritional science translates into practical dietary guidelines.
Who should attend?
The meeting is highly recommended for practitioners with an interest in the management and prevention of cardiovascular risk. This includes dietitians, nutritionists, healthcare professionals, general and medical practitioners, the food industry, academics and post and undergraduate student
