This meeting will provide a review of current guidelines and research in invasive and non-invasive ventilation in intensive care.
At the end of the meeting participants will
1. Review the basics of mechanical ventilation, including setting PEEP, and understand principles of newer modes of mechanical ventilation such as NAVA (neurally adjusted ventilatory assist) ventilation.
2. Understand the principles of mechanical ventilation in severe respiratory failure including asthma and COPD.
3. Understand alternative strategies for treating in severe respiratory failure including extracorporeal techniques to remove carbon dioxide.
4. Understand difficulties in weaning from mechanical ventilation, and know when to refer to a specialist weaning unit.
5. Review the role for non-invasive ventilation in hypercapnic and other settings of acute respiratory failure.
