Pain Medicine is a multidisciplinary specialty and includes many categories of health care workers. The Section would work with all those sections that have an interest in Pain Medicine. The Pain Medicine Sub-section steering group currently has representation from Psychiatry, Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine, Oral Medicine, Rheumatology, Uro-gynaecology, Palliative Medicine, and Primary Care. It is also expected to recruit Veterinary Science and Associate Members to this section such as psychologists, physiotherapists, chiropractors etc
Pain is a sensation suffered by 19% of the population, excluding cancer (Pain 2004;111:51-58) and patient groups would be encouraged to participate in the Section.
Aims
- To facilitate the delivery of education and learning of the specialty of Pain Medicine through a programme of teaching that includes lectures and other meetings within the Royal Society of Medicine.
- To coordinate and facilitate up to 2 joint meetings with related sections during an academic year.
- To organise up to 2 meetings a year.
- Organise 1 or 2 international meetings a year.
Objectives
- To bring together a multidisciplinary group of contributors to enable learning and development of the specialty in the academic environment of the Royal Society of Medicine.
- To encourage participation in the art and science of Pain Medicine through education which will initiate clinical research, promote teaching, skill development and local initiatives for patient benefit through evidence based medicine.
- To ensure the representation of Pain Medicine in the academic portfolio of the Royal Society of Medicine.
- To promote education and collaboration in Pain Medicine at a national level both through the RSM and through interaction with other societies.
- To promote education, learning, the exchange of ideas and to develop methodology at an international level.
