Technology in Medicine

The practice of medicine has been revolutionised by technology. Rapid developments across the whole spectrum of healthcare are due in the main to technology. The application of engineering and materials science in unison with the physical sciences have established the field of bio-engineering as an integral part of medicine and surgery.

Technology based innovation in medicine today is widely credited with leading edge investigation, treatment, reconstruction and rehabilitation. The Royal Society of Medicine's new Section, Technology in Medicine, will focus on and encompass developments in this rapidly progressive area of healthcare.

All disciplines of medicine use and access technology, from basic instruments to complex life support and diagnostic machinery which make up a modern hospital or clinic.

The Section will encourage and promote new technology resulting from research and clinical trials bringing innovations and developments to the attention of healthcare professionals by means of symposia and novel workshops. The Section will cross many boundaries that remain defined in its objective of supporting and progressing technology in medicine and surgery.
