Anaesthesia Essay Prize - Students

Open To: All medical Students at recognised teaching institutions within UK

The paper must avoid headings, acknowledgements, names or institutions or anything that may reveal the author's identity. Applicants must have played an important part in the relevant research and must have personally written the essay for submission. The papers will be judged by a panel of three assessors. Their decision is final. The winners will be invited to the presentation, followed by dinner.

The essay may describe original research, audit or a case report.

The essay prize attracts a sum of £200 and a certificate, and the winner will be invited to present their work and receive their prize at a meeting of the Section. There is no set word limit.

Anaesthesia Section Essay Prize - Trainees

Prize: £200
Open To: All doctors in training in anaesthesia, critical care or pain management at any grade. This includes veterinary anaesthesia. The prize is open to trainees in the UK and Eire only.

Cardiology Section President's Medal

Prize: 1st: Commemoration Medal and £1000, 2nd: £500
Open To: Cardiology trainees who have received all or part of their training at recognised centres in the UK are eligible.

The President's Medal, given for original research for Specialist Registrars in Cardiology. Please submit an abstract of no more than 200 words. The subject of the presentation should represent original work.

Cardiothoracic Section Case Presentations

Open To: All cardiothoracic students and trainees at any level

Case report abstracts are invited. Preference will be given to those that illustrate a point of contemporary practice particularly on those topics under discussion at the meeting. A presenter can only present 1 abstract.

Catastrophes & Conflict Forum Medical Student Essay Prize

Prize: £250 plus encouragement and advice on submitting the essay for publication in the JRSM.
Open To: Applicants should be enrolled full-time at a UK medical school

Essays should be no longer than 1,500 words with references in the Vancouver style.

Entries will be judged on style, impact of subject and originality. Candidates may select from the titles below or choose their own:

1. The mental health effects of violent conflict: still neglected after all these years. Do you agree?

2. Climate change will be the greatest humanitarian challenge of the 21st century. Discuss

3. The only truly sustainable way to meet health needs in a humanitarian emergency is through the support of local, regional and national health services. Do you agree?

4. No country in the world is prepared for an humanitarian emergency that is caused by the release of radiation. Is this statement true?

Clinical Immunology & Allergy Medical Student Elective

The prize is intended to help towards the cost of medical student electives for those intending to work in any area related to immunology. To apply, candidates should send their curriculum vitae, a summary of their proposed elective activity and a letter of support from their intended host institution.

Clinical Immunology & Allergy Section President's Prize

Open To: Training grade doctors and young scientists (not above Specialist Registrar, Grade B Clinical Scientist or equivalent grade) with an immunological or allergy component of their clinical research.

The work to be presented must be original and substantially the candidate's own. Abstracts (not exceeding 250 words) should be submitted along with a supporting letter from a Consultant.

Clinical Neurosciences Section Gordon Holmes Prize

Open To: Trainees in neurosciences, including neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology, neuropathology or neuroradiology

Please submit a one A4 page (up to 500 words) summary of a research paper. Please ensure your abstract is anonymous - i.e. your name and the name of the institution are not mentioned or included in the text.

A maximum of five papers will be selected for oral presentation at the meeting. Presentations will be 10 minutes long followed by a 5-minute discussion. A panel of judges will determine the best presentation and the Gordon Holmes Prize of will be awarded at the end of the meeting.

Clinical Neurosciences Section President's prize

Prize: £300
Open To: Trainees in all areas of clinical neurosciences, including neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology, neuropathology or neuroradiology.

Please submit a one A4 page (up to 250 words) summary of a clinical paper on an interesting case or case series. Please ensure your abstract is anonymous - i.e. your name and the name of the institution are not mentioned or included in the text.

A maximum of five papers will be selected for oral presentation at the meeting. Presentations will be 10 minutes long followed by a 5-minute discussion. A panel of judges will determine the best presentation and the President's Prize of will be awarded at the end of the meeting.

All submissions and submission forms must be sent electronically in MS Word format, and a second copy faxed or posted with signatures if necessary.

Candidates can submit multiple abstracts but only the highest scoring abstract by any one author will be considered for the list of finalists.

Coloproctology Section and ACPGBI British Travelling Fellowship to and from the USA

The ACPGBI and the RSM Section of Coloproctology funds a Travelling Fellowship for a member of the ACPGBI to attend the Annual meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Coloproctology Section John of Arderne Medal

Prize: Best short paper of the year will win the John of Arderne Medal and a travelling fellowship to the following year's overseas meeting.

This awards is made annually to recipients selected by the Council of the Section for the quality of presentation and the content of a paper delivered at a meeting of the Section during the session.

There will be two opportunities to present at Section meetings in November and February the deadline for the most immediate will be shown above.

Coloproctology Section Travelling Fellowship

Comparative Medicine Section Young Fellows Award

Prize: One year's subscription to the Royal Society of Medicine at the Young Fellows' rate.
Open To: Members and non-Members of the RSM who are not older than 30 years of age.

The prize shall be awarded for the best verbal presentation on a topic relevant to the field of antimicrobial resistance; the current status of antimicrobial resistance primarily in food producing animals and the impact on health and the economy as a result. Interested trainees will be asked to submit a 250 word abstract. Abstracts presented previously should be declared.

Dermatology Section Clinicopathological Meetings

Dermatology Section Hugh Wallace Registrars Prize

Dermatology Section Louis Forman Scholarship

The prize shall be awarded to help fund their travel to present a research paper at an International Dermatological meeting. The result will be announced at the first (October) meeting of the Section each year. Award of the Prize shall remain the responsibility of the Dermatology Council of the Society.

Ellison-Cliffe Travelling Fellowship

Prize: £15,000
Open To: Fellows of the Royal Society of Medicine working in the UK or Ireland who are of specialist registrar or lecturer grade or equivalent or who are consultants within 3 years of their first consultant appointment.

The award is intended to cover expenses for travel abroad, to one or two centres, for a period of not less than 6 months, in pursuit of further study, research or clinical training relevant to the applicant's current interests. Candidates will be expected to take up the Fellowship between 1 July and 31 December 2013.

Applicants should submit the following:

1. A completed summary sheet

2. Curriculum vitae

3. Statement of current interests

4. Detailed proposal as to how the time abroad will be spent and where

5. Analysis of likely costs of period abroad, and statement of need for funding.

6. Names of two referees

7. Supporting statement(s) from the proposed host centre(s)

The candidate should confirm that their employing authority will grant study leave if the application is successful.

Interviews will be held on 5 December 2012.

The candidate awarded the Fellowship will be expected to provide a written report no later than 30 June 2014 about the work undertaken during the tenure of the Fellowship and to present at an appropriate RSM educational meeting.

Emergency Medicine Section Essay Prize

Emergency Medicine Section Students' Prize

This prize is to contribute towards the cost of an elective abroad, with the intention of gaining experience in the practice of emergency medicine.

Applications should provide details of the proposed elective abroad in no more than 1000 words. They should also provide a current curriculum vitae. After returning from the elective, the winner will be invited to give a presentation at one of the meetings of the Section.

Epidemiology & Public Health Section Brooke Bursary Award

Open To: Undergraduate students of a UK university going on an elective module abroad related to public health or epidemiology or students taking a postgraduate degree such as an MSc in Public Health or similar at a UK university who plan to travel abroad on an elective module as part of that degree (This award is not open to PhD students).

Applications should be for visits abroad to be made within twelve months of the closing date.

Submissions will be marked on the basis of (i) public health relevance of the project (ii) the methodology of the proposed project and (iii) evidence of Supervisory input"

General Practice with Primary Healthcare Section John Fry Prize

Open To: Submissions are open to the following: GP registrars, postgraduate students based in primary care, medical students and other undergraduates from professional groups involved in primary care, and patients with experiences from primary care

The submission should be between 2500 and 3000 words and be well referenced.

The submission should be one of the following:

1. An account of an audit or research project carried out in primary care.

2. A reflective account of a health consultation in your primary care practice.

3. A reflective account of an example of team working in primary care.

The submission will be judged on the following criteria:

Does the paper, in the spirit of John Fry, positively inform best practice involving members of the primary health and social care community, with reference to:

Accessibility, clarity, cogency and relevance

Rigour, reliability and replicability- if quantitative research

Or

Transferability, confirmability and dependability- if qualitative research

Open To: Trainees in old age psychiatry and elderly medicine

Entrants are asked to submit abstracts of no more than 250 words on the subject in elderly medicine or old age psychiatry. The cases submitted should demonstrate diagnostic or management problems relevant to older people. Out of the 10 shortlisted 5 will be invited to give an oral presentation and 5 will be invited to give a poster presentation.

Global Health Young Leaders Award

Prize: 2 grants of £700 to take an elective in Harare, Zimbabwe
Open To: All medical, midwifery or nursing students in his/her 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th year at recognised teaching institutions within the UK or Republic of Ireland, and with a minimum of 1 year clinical training at the time of application.

Entrants must:

1. Submit an essay of 1,500 words (+/-10%) on the given topic via our dedicated page: www.rsm.ac.uk/globalhealth/award.php.

Topic of the essay: 'Managing patients with HIV in communities with severely limited resources'

2. Submit an abstract between 150 and 250 words on the given topic via our dedicated page: www.rsm.ac.uk/globalhealth/award.php.

The award ceremony will be held at the Royal Society of Medicine on 28th March 2012, the last day of the RSM Global Health Conference.

Registration is based on the following information being provided: title, name, telephone number, email address, year of study, university, RSM member status and submission of the essay which includes a) title; b) abstract and c) main text.

History of Medicine Section Norah Schuster Essay Prize

Prize: £100 book token and one year's membership of the RSM
Open To: The prize is open to pre-clinical, clinical medical and dental students

This prize will be awarded for the best essay or essays submitted on any subject related to the history of medicine, including medical science. Essays should be no longer than 5,000 words and the standard should be comparable to a third year dissertation. A 500-word summary should also be submitted along with the full essay, together with a title page bearing the author's name which can be removed so that marking can be done anonymously.

Entries that do not follow these instructions will not be considered.

The winners will be asked to present a 15 minute summary of their essay at the Norah Schuster Prize evening, usually in March.

Intellectual Disability Forum Junior Professional Prize

Prize: One year's subscription to the RSM
Open To: Practising junior doctors, or junior members of any other health care profession within 3 years of postgraduate qualification, working in the UK or the Republic of Eire. The candidate need not be a member of the Royal Society of Medicine.

The prize is awarded for the best essay, project report or other piece of work concerned with furthering the welfare of children or adults with intellectual disability.

Submissions should not be more than 3000 words.

Submissions must also be accompanied by a letter from the author's supervisor or line manager, confirming that the author fulfils the criteria for entry. Only one paper may be submitted by any candidate in one year.

A letter from the student's academic institution must accompany all submissions, confirming that the author is a medical student. Only one paper may be submitted by any candidate in one year.

Only one paper may be submitted in any one year by any applicant.

Laryngology & Rhinology Section Karl Storz Travelling Scholarship

Open To: Registrars and consultants within 2 years of appointment

Short listed participants will be asked to present their abstract at a meeting of the Section. The Karl Storz Prize is awarded to the best presentation. The winner will be asked to write a report outlining how the prize has been used. Abstracts should be submitted to the co-ordinator by email on one side of A4 paper and should be anonymous ie. your name and institution should not be mentioned in the text. This should be accompanied by a separate letter giving the names of the authors and the name and contact details of the person presenting the paper. Abstracts will not be considered unless all of the authors of the paper have signed their consent that the paper will be presented by the named person.

Laryngology & Rhinology Section NeilMed Travelling Fellowship

Prize: This £1000 travel grant will be awarded for travel to Rhinology or Head and Neck Unit as either sole or as part funding for non-paid fellowship with a preference given to "widening educational value".
Open To: UK registrars and senior registrars in otolaryngology and consultants within one year of appointment who are Fellows of the RSM.

Applicants are asked to provide a current CV and details of the centre to be visited or the equipment required. The travel awards are for short-term visits only and confirmation that the centre you are visiting would be willing to participate is also required.. For both travel and equipment awards the selection committee will be looking for 'originality of purpose'.

Medical Genetics Section The Alan Emery Prize

Prize: £500 for current RSM members (or £300 and 1 year free membership to the RSM for non-members)
Open To: Open to all individuals in accredited training or research posts in the UK.

The prize is to be awarded for a published research article in medical genetics. The article should have been published in a peer reviewed journal in the last 2 years and the applicant should be the principal author. Entry is invited from all individuals in accredited training or research posts in the UK. Entries should consist of a full copy of the published article and the applicant's C.V. with a covering letter explaining, in their own words, the significance of the publication.

Otology Section temporal bone competition

Open To: All Trainees

The aim of the competition is to provide an opportunity to practice temporal bone dissection in preparation for the FRCS clinical exam. Participants have a half day sitting in which they are asked to carry out set dissections. Drilling techniques and progress through dissections are critiqued by experts in the field of otology. Trainees will be asked questions during the dissection in order to simulate the temporal bone drilling station in the FRCS examination.

The competition is FREE to all RSM members and this year has been opened up to non-RSM members at a cost of £150. There are places for 10 participants. Although priority is given to those that are approaching the FRCS exam, the competition is open to trainees at all stages.

Paediatrics & Child Health Section Sam Tucker Fellowship

Prize: The Paediatrics & Child Health section will finance RSM Young Fellows' membership fees for a period of up to 6 years for individuals with an academic record of achievement.

A maximum of 2 Fellowships will be awarded each year.

The successful candidate(s) will become Members of Council of the section for the year that they are first appointed. They will be expected to attend council meetings and submit a paper at 1 meeting (either an RSM meeting or meeting approved by the section) every 2 years.
Open To: Individuals for whom less than ten years have elapsed since they obtained their primary medical qualification.

Doctors who can demonstrate firm evidence of a commitment to a career in Paediatrics and Child Health e.g. RCPCH or senior position on ST programme and an academic record

Candidates must be proposed by a section member. Any trainee not having a proposer could approach the RCPCH/RSM in that regard.

Quality in Healthcare Section Quality Improvement Travelling Fellowship

Prize: £1500 to enable the recipient to travel internationally to a host organisation as organised by the Council. This year we are offering a split two-week attachment to South Africa that will be spent at COHSASA in Cape Town and The Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine in Durban.

The winner will be invited to return at the 2012 Pioneer lecture to present their perspectives on their fellowship.
Open To: Anyone working in healthcare in the UK: There is no requirement to be a member of any particular profession or organisation

Applicants are asked to provide a curriculum vitae which highlights their work on or contribution to quality improvement, and a statement of up to 600 words outlining how they would propose to use the travel fellowship to further both their own personal development and their work on and contribution to quality improvement in the UK.

The recipient will be encouraged to write a paper for a suitable journal which draws on his or her experiences and shares the learning he/she has gained with a wider audience.

The ideal candidate will have specific interests in quality in health care and will be able to clearly benefit from understanding quality improvement in the South African health system.

During the two weeks the fellow will be participating in the educational activities of the centre and will be a part of accreditation survey/s in South African hospital/s.

Respiratory Medicine Section Medical Student Elective Bursary

Open To: To be eligible for the bursary, candidates must be undergraduates from a recognised medical school within the United Kingdom who intend to go on an elective module related to Respiratory Medicine during the year 2010-11. The application must not be retrospective.

A description of the elective module should be made in less than 500 words must be submitted.

Judging will be anonymous and will be made by a panel of Respiratory physicians nominated by the council. Their deliberations are confidential and the decision final.

The judging will be based on the contribution of the student to the project, the originality of the work and the feasibility of the project. The project should have relevance to the development and future career of the applicant.

The author of the two best abstract will be expected to give a short presentation, relating to their elective experiences to the Section council.

There will be one prize each for a medical student and a respiratory trainee. The student must be still studying and the trainee still in training at the time of application for the prize. Judging will be anonymous and will be made by a panel of Respiratory physicians nominated by the council. Their deliberations are confidential and the decision final. The judging will be based on the contribution of the applicant, the originality, quality and scientific basis of the work.

SUBMISSION REGULATIONS

I. The John Glyn Prize is awarded for an audit project undertaken during training. Entries are welcomed from trainees from any Medical, Dental, Veterinary, hospital or primary care specialty (under the age of 40). Entries accepted will be from trainees within the tenth anniversary of the date of their primary professional qualification. We welcome entries from non-RSM trainees

II. We reserve the right to extend the submission deadline to a later date should the necessity arise

III. Entrants must indicate a 'principal' author on their initial submission form who must be the presenter of the work if the entry is successful. Principal authors must have done at least 50% of the work.

IV. Abstracts of no more than 200 words including Objective, Method, Results, Discussion and Conclusion must be submitted. More than one abstract per 'principal' author is allowed

V. All submissions must be the original work of the authors. A previous relevant presentation at a recent scientific meeting/ publication of this abstract shall not necessarily preclude the entrant(s) but must be declared

Trainees' Committee Young Medical Authors Prize

Open To: All trainees and students

Applicants should submit a brief outline (no more than 1 side of A4) of their idea for a book proposal to be presented at the meeting's Dragon Den by the deadline. The proposal could be on any aspect of medicine, however we are not currently considering fiction writing. The idea will be shortlisted by the meeting organizing committee and the top 4 applicants will selected to pitch their proposal ideas within a 5 minute window to the Dragons, who will be a panel from the UK with publishing experience.

The Dragons will know nothing of the idea until it is presented to them on the day. They will be under no obligation to officially represent their publishing house or to accept the proposal officially.

Dragon's will vote on whether to accept or decline the proposal. There will also be an audience vote on whether they would like to see the idea published. A weighted score from the Dragons and the audience will decide the overall winner.

Urology Section Professor Geoffrey D Chisholm CBE Communication Prize

A presentation of personalised silver paper knife will also be awarded at the Presidential Address in October. a) Up to a 1000 word application outlining the research costs and aim of the potential benefit of the research to the phlebology and endovenous world.

c) Letter from their Head of Department and/or a senior colleague/specialist, supporting the application.

d) Completed RSM bursary form.

The successful candidate will be announced during the Annual Spring meeting of the Venous Forum in April 2012. The winner will be expected to attend the 2013 Spring meeting and present their work in a 10 minute presentation.

Wesleyan Assurance RSM Trainee of the year award

Submission Deadline: 1 September 2012
Meeting Date: 29 November 2012
Prize: 1st - £3000 plus year's RSM Membership

2nd - £1000 plus year's RSM Membership

3rd - £500 plus year's RSM Membership
Open To: Automatic entrance to all those who win first prize in any of the RSM's prizes from October 2011 to September 2012. All Sections may put in one entry to the Wesleyan Assurance prize. If the Section only has one trainee prize then this can go through automatically, unless the Section prefers not to put the prize winner forward. Sections that hold more than one trainee prize will be asked to put forward one entry only.

All entrants will be required to produce a structured abstract of 500 words. This must include a short paragraph explaining the specialty area.

The abstracts will be judged on:

Originality

Clinical importance

Scientific content

Clarity of presentation

A prize meeting will be held with 6 presentations. The presenters will be asked to dedicate time at the beginning of the presentation to explain the specialty area and equate a general, medical audience with any specific terms. The judges will mark the presenters on their ability to present to a non-specialist audience.

All submissions must be sent electronically in MS Word format.

The Chairman of the Academic Board and the Chairman Elect (or Vice Chairman)
